| The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki's literal translation means "spiritually guided life force energy." Reiki was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan in the mid nineteenth century. Dr. Usui was impressed with Buddah's quest for enlightenment. He noted that Buddah was able to heal physical illness and that may of the Buddah's disiples aquired healing abilities by following his teachings. He wondered if it was possible to aquire, teach and utilize these same healing abilities. His search for information began in Japan in the mid 1800's. He studied at a seminary in Kyoto Japan. He studied the teachings and the ways of Jesus and wanted to know why there was no information about the healing methods of Jesus. He set out on a quest to find this information. His quest led him all over the world. He spoke with Buddhists, Priests, Tibetan Monks and anyone who would listen to his question of HOW TO HEAL. During his travels he became friends with a Zen Monastary and was invited to stay and study. The answers were found here in the Ancient Eastern Indian text, written in Sanskrit. He discovered the formula and worked with it. He traveled to the holy mountain of Kori-yama where he fasted, meditated and followed the directions of the formula for 21 days. He then received the light of this healing power, a miracle. Dr. Usui practiced and taught Reiki throughout Japan for the remainder of his life. Reiki must be passed on from Reiki Master to Reiki student in a combination of teachings and attunements in several stages. Once a student has acquired only one attunement, the Reiki energy begins to flow. It gets stronger with more lessons and attunements. Reiki allows the giver to lay their hands on a person who is in need, and let the life force energy flow through their hands into the person. Reiki can also be practiced over long distances. The Reiki Master can pass the energy through dimensions above our physical dimension. The ideals of Reiki must be practiced in daily life in order for the Reiki energy to flow and provide lasting results. The client must also accept responsibility for his or her healing and take an active part in it. For example if someone with cancer was to receive a healing and then keep smoking cigarettes, then Reiki treatments can not be expected to last!
